A larger grille that takes centre stage up front receives the necessary amount of flash with metal-like embellishments. The top’s recognisable, slim Daytime Running Lamps have been further condensed and are now joined by a light bar. A new knurled rotary selector for the Terrain modes is one of the other changes made to the Harrier. It is located in front of the gear lever. The 2-liter, 170hp, 350Nm diesel engine feels the same from the driver’s seat as the earlier models. And the reason for this is that it still has the same qualities, including a strong mid-range, a wide powerband, and the general feeling of a powerful engine. However, refinement levels are still far below class-best levels, and this engine booms when you extend it and groans and moans at low speeds.

The package includes three different drive modes: Eco, City, and Sport. Each mode has a unique profile, with Sport having the most responsive throttle and Eco having the most relaxed throttle. The front-wheel drive Harrier is not an off-road vehicle, but there are also terrain modes for Normal, Wet, and Rough terrain that modify ESC characteristics for various conditions. However, it has all the necessary ground clearance and can easily handle short trails.

Both a six-speed torque converter automatic and a six-speed manual gearbox are available. The updated Harrier’s manual gearbox provided a slightly improved shift, but changing gear still requires some effort. The clutch, which has a long travel and is difficult to modulate, is the bigger problem.

ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system ) & Safety – Tata Harrier 2023

Although the Tata Harrier has not yet received a rating from Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP, sources indicate that it will be submitted for both programmes, with a 5-star rating being the desired outcome.

RIDE & HANDLING – Tata Harrier 2023

That concludes the exterior and interior changes. But how does the upgraded Harrier drive? The addition of rear disc brakes, the change from hydraulic to electric power steering, the use of larger wheels, modifications to the suspension, and the BS6.2 engine all hold great promise.

The enhanced steering is the modification that most significantly alters the driving experience of the Harrier. The advantages of the new arrangement become apparent almost immediately, with much less steering effort needed during U-turns and at parking speeds. The advantages of the new steering setup also apply in high-speed situations. The old Harrier’s inconsistent steering feel (slack at the centre then a sharp response with only a few degrees of lock) has been eliminated.

Overall, handling seems more organised. When you’re driving faster, the sport driving mode gives the steering a little more weight. I’m also happy to report that the Harrier no longer has a steering kickback issue.

Has the Harrier’s ride been tainted by the switch to larger rims? No, actually. In actuality, this aspect of the updated Harrier feels essentially unchanged. The Harrier continues to feel a little jittery and even a little firm on smaller surface imperfections. The Harrier excels and handles the bumps like a champ as the potholes get bigger.

The ride also improves as you speed up; it is more stable at higher speeds, drives like a heavy vehicle, and everything comes together. Rear disc brakes are now standard on higher-end Harrier models. All four discs perform well when braking, but the pedal feels a little mushy. There is a lot of pitch and the Harrier’s sheer weight makes it impossible to avoid under hard braking.

EXPECTED PRICE & VARIANTS – Tata Harrier 2023

On October 17, the 2024 Harrier will go on sale, and it is safe to assume that prices will increase. The base Smart trim should cost Rs 16 lakh, and the fully equipped Fearless+ Dark Edition should cost Rs 25 lakh.

Tata has addressed many of the shortcomings of the Harrier with the updates. The new steering makes the SUV much easier to live with, the tech has advanced significantly, and the interior now has a newfound wow factor. At the same time, the updated styling brilliantly enhances the original concept.

A petrol engine is still needed, and despite the diesel’s punch, it isn’t as refined as it should be. But when you consider everything together, the Harrier is now a Tata you’d be happy to spend a lot of money on. They’ll be everywhere, especially on our roads.
